In computed tomography (CT), an x-ray tube is moved around the body to project a thin fan of x-rays through the body and electronic detectors opposite the tube continuously monitor the number of x-rays passing through the body and the angle of which it is being projected. The number of x-rays passing through the body changes as the beam passes through different tissues due to the tube's movement, so a computer mathematically evaluates the data to determine the most probable density of any point within the volume of tissue scanned. The density is generally measured in terms of Hounsfield units, which divides possible densities into 4,000 levels ranging from -1,000 to +3,000. Air is typically -1,000, water is at 0 and values greater than 0 represent greater densities such as lead or metals. This is because these units represent the degree the x-ray beam is attenuated to generate an image shown on the monitor and stored as a digital file. Each x-ray's attenuation points combine to create an image of the cross-section of the portion of the body that is scanned, which is known as a slice and the individual attenuation points in the image is known as a voxel (volume element). To complete a scan the animal is moved a certain number of millimeters and the process is repeated. Through this the whole area of interest can be imaged with no structures overlapping each other.
CT has better contrast discrimination than regular fluotography, so structures can be seen distinctly such as parts of the brain or muscles bellies. Contrast media atttempts to further enhance the contrast between structures and better characterize the lesions. Many veterinary referral practices and some general practices now have 8- to 64-slice scanners installed, and scans usually take less time than it does to position the animal on the scanning table. However, to perform most studies, the animal must be anesthetized and immobilized, but correct information is still requested in a short period of time. For rare cases where sedation would alter the tissues, the animal can be minimally sedated or kept awake to tried to evaluate the effect of drug intervention in an asthmatic cat.
CT scans are widely used to detect structural changes deep with the body such as tumors, abscesses, vascular abnormalities, occult fractures, and hematomas, but they can also be used to evaluate dynamic physiological processes like blood flow, respiratory volume, cardiac functioning, and intestinal dynamics. Those operating the scanner should be well-trained and experienced to read and interpret these images correctly, as gaining an understanding of anatomy, physiology, and any artifacts within the scan is essential to diagnosing any abnormalities correctly.
