In computed tomography (CT), an x-ray tube rotates around the body while continuously projecting a thin fan of x-rays. Electronic detectors opposite the tube measure the number of x-rays passing through the body and its angle of projection. The number of x-rays reaching the detector changes as the beam passes through different tissues. This data is then processed by a computer to determine the most probable density at each point inside the volume scanned. The density is calculated in Hounsfield units, which divide the entire spectrum of possible densities into 4,000 levels ranging from -1,000 to 3,000. The lower the value, the lower the density. Air is represented by -1,000, whereas water is assigned 0, with lead or other heavy metal being the densest at +3,000.
The resulting image on the monitor is an attenuation map, each point or 'voxel' representing the attenuation of the x-ray beam at that point. All the attenuation points combine to make a cross-section image of the body. After moving the animal a certain distance, the process is repeated, thereby scanning the whole area of interest. CT has much better contrast discrimination than standard radiographs, so individual parts of the body are easier to distinguish.
Contrast media can also be used to increase the contrast between structures. Many veterinary referral practices have 8 - 64 slice scanners, and the scan itself is relatively quick. Due to the sensitive nature of tomography, animals must be sedated or anesthetised, although the interval of anesthesia is short. CT scans are used to detect deep structural changes and modern scanners are used to evaluate dynamic processes such as blood flow. To use them effectively, CT scan operators need to have in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, artifacts and of the operation of the scanners.
