In computed tomography (CT), a thin fan of x-rays are continuously projected through the body by an x-ray tube, as the tube moves around the body. Electronic detectors on the opposite side of the tube monitor the x-rays throughout the body, as the number of x-rays that reach the detector changes when the beam passes through different tissues. A computer then calculates the data, and finds the most likely density of any point within the volume of tissue scanned. This is usually determined in terms of Hounsfield units, ranging from -1000 to +3000, with air at -1000, water at 0, and lead at +3000.
Using the data collected, a “attenuation map” is then displayed on a monitor, which is a image of the combination of all the points of attenuation. This “slice” of the portion of the body being scanned is referred to as a "voxel", and is a volume element. The animal is then moved, and the process is repeated. This process allows an entire volume of the body to be scanned without any superimposition of structures, and CT scans are found to have better contrast discrimination than standard radiographs.
Furthermore, contrast media is sometimes used to help characterize lesions and further enhance the contrast between structures. CT scanning has come a long way over the years and many practices are now installing 8-64 slice scanners. Usually, animal patients must be anesthetised during CT scanning, however the period of anesthesia is short and the information derived is valuable.
Not only are CT scans used to detect structural changes deep within the body, such as tumors or abscesses, but they’re also used to evaluate dynamic physiologic processes like blood flow and cardic function. Extensive knowledge, experience and training are all vital in becoming a proficient CT scanner, as they are needed to ascertain structures in any plane and to evaluate changes within the anatomy or physiology. Technologists need to be specifically trained and experienced in order to produce the best Ct scanning images possible.
