In computed tomography (CT), an x-ray tube moves around the body and continuously projects a thin fan of x-rays through the body. Electronic detectors opposite the tube continuously monitor the number of x-rays passing through the body and the angle at which the beam is being projected. The number of x-rays reaching the detector changes as the beam passes through different tissues because of the tube movement. A computer mathematically evaluates the data and determines the most probable density of any point within the volume of tissue scanned. The density is generally measured in terms of Hounsfield Units, which divide the entire spectrum of possible densities into 4,000 levels extending from a value of –1,000 to +3,000, with air being considered to have a value of –1,000, water at 0 and lead or other heavy metals at +3,000.
This information is used to create an attenuation map which is displayed on the monitor and is stored as a digital file by the computer. The image generated is a cross-section of the portion of the body which the beam was passed through which is usually referred to as a slice and each individual attenuation point in the image is referred to as a voxel (volume element). To image the whole area of interest, the animal is then scanned again by moving a specified number of millimeters.
CT scans provide better contrast discrimination than regular radiographs, enabling structures such as individual parts of the brain or muscle bellies to be seen clearly and distinctly. In addition, contrast media can be used to enhance the contrast between structures and aid in the characterization of lesions.
Modern scanners needing little time to drive a scan makes it possible to perform most studies without anesthesia or prolonged immobilization, further increasing the opportunities to obtain valuable and informative information. However, scans performed on awake or minimally sedated animals tend to lack controlled positioning and reflect movement, thus making them difficult to interpret.
CT scans are used to detect structural changes deep within the body, including tumors, abscesses, vascular abnormalities, occult fractures, and hematomas. High-speed scanners are also utilized to evaluate dynamic physiologic processes such as blood flow, changes in respiratory volume, cardiac function and intestinal dynamics. For the best results, the radiologist must possess knowledge of various aspects such as anatomy, physiology, artifacts and so on. Extensive training and experience is also necessary to successfully derive the maximum information from these scans.
